Time to change my k&n oil filter and top off the RP. Anyone know how much oil I'll need to replace and how much oil I should to expect to come gushing out after removing the filter? The filter is sort of in a precarious spot and it seems like it'll make one heck of a mess (concerned cause I cant have oil leaking on my parking stall).

Any tips ya'll like to share?

Mahalos...

I do it with my truck cold and then change the filter..... Then with the drain plug out, I pour in a 1/2 qt of new oil and wait .... Thats just me though....

About 1/8 qt can come out or more.... IF warm it could be close to a Quart !!!

ALSO I fill the filter before installing it, Check for the old oil filter gasket came off, Wipe everything clean....

The truck takes 5 qts, BUT out of bottles I always find you need 5.5 qts for a nice full level..

I'd say it would be good to have a couple of quarts on hand. You probably won't need all of that, but just in case...

Here are a few things that I've done to minimize the mess:

1. Put a plastic grocery bag up around the filter when removing it. This won't catch all of the oil, but will catch some of it.

2. If you don't have an old shower curtain liner laying around the house, go out and buy a cheap (under $10) one and lay it down under the vehicle. That way, anything that drips down stays on it and doesn't get on the pavement. When you're done, just pull it out from under the truck, fold it up,and dispose of it.

3. You could also use the old tried and true technique of punching a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain all of the oil into a drain pan first, then remove the filter.

Since he said he's using RP, I'm assuming that he's just changing the filter and not all of the oil.

Great suggestions Guys

Yeah, I'm just changing the filter and topping off. Never done it this way before...I'm used to the conventional method of changing oil.

I have unlimited access to hospital blankets, sheets, towels, etc., I'm going to put down several layers of blankets to keep the pavement clean. What worried me most is getting oil all over myself as I unscrewed the filter. The plastic bag and hole in the filter idea...SLICK!!!

Discarded cardboard boxes folded flat and old newspapers are cost effective too. Why is the term "green" so popular today? Like we didn't know what "zero population" meant 40 years ago! GMAB
