Hey all I just bought a 52" Sharp Aquos TV, took the DLP back. Anyway, I tried playing movies via my DVD and my XBOX 360, and the display says its in 480i....

What am I missing to get 1080 out of DVDs? Do I need special DVDs?

Thanks!

Buy better quality adult DVD's !.... :eek::eek::lol::lol:

Because if you don't have an HD-DVD player it won't output a 1080i signal. The only way to get an HD signal out of the Xbox with regard to movies is with the optional external HD-DVD drive.

There is no 1080p content at present to my knowledge, only 1080i/720p, both of which qualify for HD. Again, to output a movie in HD (1080i/720p are only current output sources) you have to have the external HD-DVD drive from Microsoft for their XBOX.

Ummm, when I play my 360 it's in 1080i. You will have to go to the settings in the dashboard and adjust the output. I watch movies from the 360 in 1080i, movies from the 5disc in 720p, and HD DirecTV in 1080i. It's all in the settings of everything.

Also, make sure the switch on the back of the 360 that's on the video connector is set to "HDTV"

Yes..the games output in 1080i, however in order to get that for DVD's, Get the HD DVD drive for it (200 bucks) and hook it up. The PQ over regaulr DVD is amazing...

And you will have to buy HD DVDs. Of course, the HD drive of the XBOX probably does upconvert regular DVDs, but you can't "create" true increased resolution from a lower-res source. The older DVDs might look better, but only marginally. The stunning difference as A1 states is with HD DVDs.

1080i output for games is different than 1080i output for a DVD movie. Again, to watch a DVD in HD using an XBOX 360 you will have to obtain the HD-DVD accessory (which is why it is an option). It will not play a Blue-Ray HD movie, only HD-DVD movies.

1080p is output only via HDMI cable. Also, on the back of the DVD case, it should state the supported resolution. Most if not all HD games are 720p

I bought s 62" 1080p Samsung DLP in September. I went out and bought a Samsung upconverting DVD player.

From what I read in my TV owners manual, the processor in the TV will upconvert standard definition inputs to 1080i. My Xbox looks awesome on it.

The DVDs also look spectacular.

Is there a setting on the TV to allow upconvert from 480 to 1080?

Fkent, I doubt it.

You can only upconvert so much. Sure, the final signal is the higher resolution, but a good upconverter has to extrapolate to "fill in the blanks" from the lower-res source, and the final image is not as good as a true, HD source.

The DVDs only look marginally better upconverted in this way. A true HD dvd on your Samsung would blow you away in comparison.

You calling Samsung a liar????

I am sure a true HD source for my DVDs would look better, I have the HD Dish receiver and the HD Channels look great.

I am not interested in getting HD DVD or Blue Ray until the issue is settled as to who wins the format battle.

I am waiting for Dish to announce they will have 100 HD Channels like Direct TV just announced.
