As I have shared in another thread, my wife's Mountaineer is coming off lease in a few months so we are looking at 7 passenger, AWD cross-over SUVs for her as a replacement vehicle.

We have narrowed down the choices to a used, 2006 Volva XC90 with 13,000 miles, and warranted until 2011 or 100K miles. I'm pretty sure we can get the vehicle for $34K.

I can probably get $15K for trade on my '04 ST XLT Premium, w/ 4WD. It has low miles at about 31,000, and not a tranny flare in sight. Dealer serviced with records all the way.

Should I try to sell it outright for over $17K?

The numbers I am quoting are in-line with Edmunds in my area.

My reasons for getting rid of the ST along with the off-lease Mountaineer is that we are looking to downsize and not have two SUVs. I'm thinking of buying myself a commuter car for replacement (cheapo, FWD, 4 door sedan).

Advise? Sell third-party asking $17.5K, or let it go to the dealer for $15K in trade.

Remember, when trading you will reduce the sales tax by that much. $15,000 x 6% = $900.

So really you are getting close to $16,000 for your trade. Now you just have to decide if selling it privately is worth the $1,500 (plus the hassle). And you have to consider you may not be able to sell for $17,500. Go to the dealer and find out exactly what sort of deal you can make. Good luck...

I think the dealer will give you closer to 13K-13.5K. Used cars get marked up 25-35% or more. On trade in they will broker it out wholesale to used car dealers. They normally don't go off of Edmunds pricing.

SST, I was using the Edumunds dealer trade-in price of $14,880, not the third-party sale price of something like $17,500.

I've always started with the dealer trade-in price that Edmunds quotes, and the only time I have ever gone under that is if there were excessive wear and tear (like when I traded in my '00 Impala back in 04 and it needed new ball joints, etc).

All I'm saying is the ST probably won't be resold on the Volvo dealer's lot. They will auction it off to the highest wholesale bidder used dealership. And, I highly doubt the buying dealership is going to pay Edmunds trade in values especially on a Ford.

Then again they might give you 15K and 36K on the other vehicle.

SST, I agree, it will be auctioned off or liquidated to a reseller and not sold on the lot. I have little tolerance for dealer pricing shell games, where they meet one part of the deal by inflating another. I have shared my "offer" and pricing spreadsheet with the dealer. If he can meet my terms, we will talk. If he can't, we will be done talking.

P.S....so you guys don't think I'm hating Ford, Volvo is a Ford Mo Co product, and the econobox I am looking closely at is the Ford Focus. Seems we could move from a 04 Mountaineer and ST in our garage to an 06 Volvo XC90 and 07 Focus, and not pay a dime more a month...if all goes well in my wheeling and dealing.

I am going to buy a XC90 soon, too. I found a brand new, I6 AWD for about $37,000 OTD.

I also looked at the VW touareg.. but the xc90 is a better fit and finish, IMO.

Good luck, TJR.

BTW, the certified used Volvo's warrenty is awesome.

Mud,

Wow, that's a great price for new.

Is that with the Premium Package (Leather), Versatility Package (3rd row seat) and AWD? If so, that's one hell of a deal...Edmunds lists that combo at $41,206 invoice, $41,934 TMV.

TJR

Okay, Volvo is out...we've talked to too many people complaining that the new models don't hold their value and that they have lots of electronics issues.

So, now on the short list is a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica...I know...I said I would shoot myself before buying another Chrysler product.

Anyone have the Pacifica? You like it? We are looking at the AWD Touring package.

TJR

TJR,

Check out the Mazda 3, which is similar to the Focus and made by Ford, but will retain its value better, because it isn't a domestic brand.

Nelson, that's not a bad idea, but the local Mazda dealer is really, really crappy. They have no show room, dinky crowded lot, no real customer parking...just crap. They seem like they might close shop at any minute. And I like to buy local and get service from the dealer.

TJR, I have looked at the Pacifica and actually test drove one. (my dad was looking to get a new vehicle and I'm his "opinion") Not a bad vehicle. I liked the room and the looks of the vehicle. I just didn't like the ride. Seemed alittle to minivan to me. I felt every bump in the road. It really comes down to your taste and needs. Just keep looking and if your luck is anything like mine, something will fall into your lap and it will be everything you were looking for. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.;)

Thanks stone....we test drove one last night. I was a passenger in the front seat, and I thought it rode very smooth. We took it fast down some bumpy roads...rather smooth and quiet.

It rode very differently from our last MOPAC product, a '94 Plymouth Voyager...that thing was all shakes and rattles, with the stopping power of a 17 year old boy on prom night.

Tom

May have been the model. I think I was expecting more out of the ride. The power of the engine was a surprise for the "bulk" look of the vehicle though. I'm like you though, I'm just not a big fan of Chrysler vehicles. My Jeep Grand Cherokee ruined me for anything Chrysler. So, I'm not able to be really Bias. I do think they are a nice looking vehicle though. I see quite a few in the parking lot here at work, so they can't be all bad.;)

To save face, he will get rid of the Tundra before it falls apart.

Which is the least I can say about my Trac... should have traded it in wayyy sooner than I did.

POS.

;)

Josh...you already tearup the Tundra..

No. I feel like having another new vehicle, that's all.
