Hey all, just thought i'd see if anyone had a good util/idea for ridding a directory of files and sub directories of duplicate files (mp3s in particular)....

TIA!

Sorry, don't have one, but a Google search on "DUPLICATE FILE UTILITY" will find a ton. Stick with reputable download sites like CNET so as not to get any spyware.

iTunes works as well. Have it scan your computer for MP3s, then you can select it to show "duplicate files", and delete them off your computer from iTunes. It only works if the songs have information filled out on them: Title, Artist, Album; as that's how iTunes recognizes duplicates.

WinAmp is free and will delete duplicates but the files must be exact matches. It is very common for matching mp3s to be off by a few kilo bytes or what have you.

I just organize a folder in alphabetical order, hold the control key and click on all dupes and hit delete. It takes a little longer but I'm deleting what I want and not losing something by mistake. As long as the naming covention is similar this will help (artist-song title or song title-artist. A lot of programs look for tags and a misspelling or difference in format could cause files to be skipped.
