I'm backing up files in order to install a new OS. Actually it's nothing new I just finally "bought" a Windows OS:D. Anyway, when I back up I generally just put all files and folders needed on a DVD. I do all of this via Nero 6.6 on a Plextor 712A.

The problem I'm running in to is a large video file of my son. It's over 2GB so I have to copy it as a UDF file. I've succeeded in making 4 coasters so far:angry:. This is not normal with nero and plextor. It'll lock up at around 50% completion.

Anyone have any suggestions or different methods? Thanks.

There are applications that will split the file into smaller portions to be burned to disc, and piece them back together after placing them in the new drive...

If there is a 2GB limit on files (many apps have this) then use winzip to cut it into a spanned archive with no compression, that limits each sections size to under 2GB.

Alternatively, use an external hard drive, or add a second internal drive to store the files on, and install the OS on a different drive.

If your data is on another partition, then it should be safe as long as you only format and install on the OS partition.

Also make sure that your drive does not have any errors. I have had a bad drive lock up at a set limit while backing up or copying files, where the error seems to be a file size limit.

Well I used a simple solution. I went ahead and used Pinnacle to finalize the clip as a VCD and put it on a cd-r. I didn't think about this before as the video was raw. If I ever want to edit it I'll just have to download it again into the software.

Thanks for your responses.
