Well, actually, this could be good news. Sales volume doesn't speak about profitability. If Ford sold twice as many vehicles, but lost $1,000 on each one, they would be worse off than they would be selling 1/2 as many and making a $1,000 profit on each one.

Money Magazine didn't really give enough information in this article in my opinion. I used to read Money for investment guidance, and this article doesn't give anything useful for an investor.

Nelson...good and bad reasoning. Even though they are losing 1K on a vehicle they are still bringing in cash flow. Remember, they have a nice size loan to pay off. Stock price suffers when you have no growth. And, even worse when your sales are down.

In Central Canada, every second vehicle i see is a Ford Escape and every 3rd truck i see is a F150.

If i was to get into an accident there is a 1/3 chance its gunna be another Ford.

I wonder if we will still be able to get parts for our ST's if Ford goes out of business?

Some company will remain to supply those parts for at least five years until all of the Fords in the road find their way to the junkyards. Repair parts for Fords is too big a market to just let die.

honda will see more of an increase with the redesigned accord and another great year for the crv. toyota needs a real sports car in it's lineup.

talking to my ford regional rep, he stated that the edge and fusion are moving very well. i guess the rest of the line needs another look, imo , taurus, tarus x ??????????, and do something with the focus!

dingo, i guess "grotesque" sells.

look at ford's superior designs. like i said taurus, focus and even the mustang is looking blah !

The articles that I have read state that sales to rental fleets are down 62% from same month one year ago. In my opinion, that is a good thing. Not much profit is those types of sales and they only ruin the resale value. Look at the old Taurus. There was also one additional selling day in Sept, 06. While the news is not great I don't think anyone is planning to lock the doors anytime soon.

blksn8k,

in contrast to you thinking it is " a good thing " that rental and fleets sales are down a whopping 62%, it is a very important negative factor for the manufacture .

fleet/rental sales are considered vehicles sold. its only recently that import manufactures are entering into fleet sales ( honda is still not in that group ) in turn competing for the valued fleet market. there is a profit on every vehicle built that is sold to a consumer whether it is private or commercial purchase and if fleet sales are off by those numbers, that is not a good thing.
