Why do they call it friendly fire? Doesn't seem friendly to me. They are still dead.

It happens MUCH more than we either know of or than what is admitted.
I was on patrol on a 25 foot Boston Whaler. We took fire from shore and the boat was hit a few times. One bullet passed thru a PRC-12127 Radio, (Hi tech radio that pretty much does it all). In the picture below you can see the radio. It is on top of the console where the triangle is painted, (ironically so we could be ID'd from shore) and is that long green box. It exploded internally and blew out both my ear drums and popped my right eye out as I was wearing the headset and received an audible tone that I can not explain to this day.
At any rate, upon inspection, the holes measured out to be 227 rounds. That would be USA ammo used in M-16's....
I am just glad no one got hit on our boat. We were going 44 knots, so who really knows what happened.
I want to think we were simply behind a target they were shooting at????

I know that when I was in Nam there were incidents of deliberate shooting of some “unpopular†persons. And in the field you could salute an officer to see if Charlie was around.
I can see a mistake, but just wondered why it is called “friendly fireâ€. I guess one name is good as another

Biz,
It's called "friendly fire" because it originated from the friend, not the enemy. I suppose you didn't get that answer because most thought your question was rhetorical.

It happens a lot . .both times I was in Iraq our unit lost 4-5 soldiers at least to friendly fire. Investigations are initiated for nearly every shot fired out there. Should not be this much of news . .
