i got to change all the spark plugs even the 2 that were hard to reach. i took off the right wheel n somehow i got it out. alot of u guys told me to go with motorcraft or autolite but i went with bosch because i posted after i had already bought them so i didnt wana go bak n return n all that hassle. if i see the gas mileage acting up then ill change them to motorcraft. i also changed my oil along with the spark plugs. i used mobil 1 for the oil. i have a noise that sounds like little nails r loose in my engine everytime i like pass 40 mph n the exhaust goes quiet i get that noise. idk wat it is not only is it annoying but its scaring me lol. if neone knows let me know so i can fix it. thanks again guys

Are you talking about engine ping?

This from the web:

Engine knocking

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Knocking (also called pinking or pinging)— colloquially detonation—in internal combustion engines occurs when air/fuel mixture in the cylinder has been ignited by the spark plug and the smooth burning is interrupted by the unburned mixture in the combustion chamber exploding before the flame front can reach it. The engineered combusting process ceases, because of the explosion, before the optimum moment for the four-stroke cycle. The resulting shockwave reverberates in the combustion chamber, creating a characteristic metallic "pinging" sound, and pressures increase catastrophically.

cant i jsut cut them off but leave the o2 sensors?i have a shop where my friend works n he cuts the cats off n sticks in the o2 sensors. florida i dont think has emission laws or w.e so im not worried about that. wat should i do then?

It is a federal law that if your friend gets busted, he will be fined $50,000 for cutting off the converters.

You need to adress the problem. Is it pinging or not. Try a different grade of gasoline. If it goes away you have detonation issues.

As for the converters, I have never hear that them making a noise is a sign they are going out.

Did this problem start before of after the plug swap?

Tom

its not the gas because when my dad first heard the noise abotu a year ago, he told me to use 93 octane because i was using cheap gas. so i did. ive been runnign 93 octane since n it comes back wenever it wants to. maybe its always and half the time i dotn hear it or something. it cant be the gas im pretty sure. this problem occurred waaayyyy before the plug swap. idk wat it is but i really want to know.

You are aware that high octane fuel in an engine that is not designed to run it can produce carbon build-up in the combustion chamber.

You could try the Sea Foam project. that might remove some carbon, if any in your combustion chambers.

Without hearing the noise myself, I can not tell what noise you are hearing. It could be heat in your converters, it could be a slight exhaust manifold leak. Without hearing it, I..nor anyone else, can properly diagnose it.

The honeycomb in the inside could have come loose. A heat shield will make a rattle noise at a certain RPM, but that doesn't mean the converters are bad. I had a vehicle that failed smog testing because the Converter quit working. A replacement converter was installed and it passed with flying colors. A friend was only able to drive 10 MPH because his converters were plugged.

Honestly, how many people here have had thier converters fail?

Tom

Internal rattle, Tom. It was loud (right behind the firewall).

The Daytona was about 6 years old, and had about 90,000 miles on it (I bought it new).

I put a universal cat on it for about $100 and it ran great. Lived in St. Louis (fricken EPA zone with emmision inspections), so I had to replace the Cat. JC Whitney had Cat Test Pipes for $20 that would have bolted in just fine instead of the cat (to "test" the operation without a cat).

On my 1989 Escort, the converter made an extremly loud and annoying rattle. The cause was the stitch weld used for the heat shield. I wraped a hose clamp around it and it never made a sound again. When I got my 1992 Escort, I put the clamp around it shortly after I got it. I did not want to hear that annoying sound.

The converter was fine internally, the outside noise from the heatshield was horrendous.

Mine sounded like a metal bucket filled with gravel when I shook it. The case was OK-- just a little surface rust.

I thought about taking a piece of pipe and rammed through it to get the catalyst out and then just put it back on, but the fitting for the air injection system broke off when I was removing it.

Neither the original nor the universal replacement had a heat sheild directely attached. This thing was mounted very close to the backside of the 4-cylinder engine and had quite a a bit of room around it. There was some shielding on the firewall I recall.

I know what you are talking about with the rattling shield. I had a Honda bike that the shield mount came loose and the thing rattled. Funny--a hose clamp fixed that one pretty quickly too!

While everone is talking about a noise when i crank up my st and is just sitting there i hear a rattle also i thought that i might need to change my plugs so i just called about 5 min ago and got a price 55 dollars for fuel filter wires and plugs.(motocraft plugs) will that stop my rattle that i hear when it is just sitting there.
