My 01' has suddenly gone from 15-16mpg to 11mpg in town. The only code is P1000 which relates to the Evaporative system according to my reading of this link: http://www.obdii.com/drivecycleford.html

Does this explain my sharp decline in mpg? The truck has just been tuned (wires, plugs, filters). It does run smoothly at idle and on the road. I would appreciate any advice on where to look.

Steve,

The P1000 code is that all system checks are not complete, This means you either disconnected the battery recently and or cleared the codes..

The P1000 will not turn on the Check engine Light.

Are you sure you have the right code?

Is your CEL on?

Todd, I do not have a check engine light on and have not had a CEL for a long time. I did disconnect the battery recently so now I know that is why I have a P1000 code. I have installed an 87 octane economy tune with my XCal2 and have returned it to the stock tune when I began noticing the sharp decline in mpg. Could the O@ sensors be the cause of my mpg decline without setting a code or the CEL? I don't know what else to check.

I personally never liked the MPG tunes, they cause you to give the truck more gas to get going especially on Local driving....

I say install a performance tune and see what you get..

Todd, I have been on the stock tune for 2 tanks of gas and the mpg is still in the 11mpg range. Do you think it is possible for the O2 sensors OR something else to be the problem even tho' there are no codes or CEL? The wires, plugs, filters are all new. I am certainly willing to try the performance tune but can't figure out why the mpg has not returned since I have reset the stock tune.

Steve again I am siding with the primary 02 sensors being at fault here. There is a mechanical problem of some sort that is not related to the calibration.

If you try multiple tunes and even the stock one and net 0 change its a mechanical problem.

O2 sensors are only expected to last 60,000 miles.. after that they can get LAZY and not provide a proper signal to the computer.. i'd say pull the sensors and inspect...

An oxygen sensor will always have a mileage rating, which indicates the duration that the oxygen sensor is expected to last. There are several ways to find this information. A car's owner's manual or shop manual should state the expected lifespan of its oxygen sensor. If these books are not available, the dealership can look up the expected lifespan of an oxygen sensor for a specific car. Many aftermarket auto parts stores have the same information. In general, the oxygen sensor in an older car will last approximately 30,000 miles (about 48,280 km), while the oxygen sensor in a newer car can be expected to last 60,000 miles (96,561 km) or more.

Once you know the mileage rating for the oxygen sensor in your car, it is a good idea to keep records of when maintenance is done; if you know when the sensor was last replaced, you'll know when it should be replaced again. Replacing your oxygen sensor regularly maintains your gas mileage, prevents other related car troubles, and helps prevent failed emissions tests due to malfunctioning oxygen sensors.

Steve told me the 02's have been on from the factory.

Email me your address man. I am so confident they are the problem as I have been telling you already in email the last couple of days I'll send you a set.

Change the sensors, But i would try to data log the voltages first, I don't like just changing parts out and see if it fixes it first....

Did you check the common vacuum elbow by any chance ???

Todd Z

He's gone past the 100,000 mile point they need to be replaced unless something else is out of whack that we don't know about. And my guess if that was the case he would be dealing with odd ball drivability issues.

I even offered to send the man a pair to install if they did the trick he could pay me later.
