painting over veneer

I would like to paint a dresser with a veneer surface. Any suggestions as to the best method. Should I sand it first, primer, and paint? Or is there more to it than that? thanks

Sand and primer. I'm pretty sure there is primer designed to go over veneer. Go to a paint store and ask.
