Long story short, I have to replace a color matched Bugflector II with a clear one from another company.

I have 3 options:

1. Put it on clear.

2. Paint the back side (preferred, but was told that preping the back side may not get the results I am want; and a vinyl wrap is cost prohibative)

3. Paint the front side

What sayeth thou?

Rodger, I remember threads in the past. Members did the back side and were pleased with the results. Maybe some will chime in with pics.

I would think the front might get alot of chips.

I had an older smoked one.. and painted it color matched (White) did front and back..

but if you prep right painting from the back is the best.. and it will not chip the paint.

Radio controlled are dont this way all the time.. and they use clear Lexan bodies.

I am sure you can do a little research on it and find out the proper prep for it.

I would post pics of mine but seems all my photos on MYST have been removed or cleared out for more room.

I painted the backside of mine with Krylon fusion 4 yrs ago and it has held up fine. I just cleaned it and masked off the front for prep. Very pleased with it. My ST is white so color matching wasn't really an issue.

I would STOP messing with this thing and just put a smoked one on there and leave it alone !!!!!

the smoked black looks awesome on the red....

Ditto what Todd said. I had a smoked one on my truck, painted it after it stared looking bad, and just replaced it with a 20.00 deflecter that is smoked..

Yes, I would paint the backside as well.

Did anyone explain why preping the back side would be any harder or different than preping the front side??? And why the results would be different?

Thanks guys! I do already have a clear one in my possesion, and do not want to exchange it as I went through a challenge with Summit Racing just to get the clear one. I will go ahead and paint the back side to color match the Toreador Red because even though leaving it clear would be O.K., the clear is noticable.

Todd & Chad, That is your judgement.

The quote I got on doing the vinyl was for an American Flag on the back side, and if I had the extra cash I would definately do that.

Color match is way better then smoked. Is there anything else you would want sprayed body color? Get it all done at once t osave some money maybe.

Rodger,

I had a Torreador Red 2001 Sport Trac and I got my matching bug deflector from Wal-Mart for about $35 and got it within a week.

I don't know if Wal-Mart still sells them (10 years ago) or if the company still makes them in matching colors or with the American flag, but it might not hurt to go by Wally World and see what they have?

Richard, I have never seen them at Wall-Mart in our area.

Recap of the last 3 mos. for those that may not have been following the saga:

I ordered a color matching Bugflector II from Summit Racing, where I got my first one, because I had to have to my hood re-painted under warrenty and [/i]they broke my color matched Bugflector II while removing it to paint the hood[/i]; and after waiting well over a month with it being on back order I called them to see what was going on with my order. I talked with the next level up in the chain of command at Summit Racing ordering dept. and he call Autoventshade where he was told that the Bugflector II is now only come on smoke. I the asked if he could find another supplier that had one in clear, and he did. I've been dealing with their issues around their reluctance to paint it for me. I will paint it on the back side one way or another and bill the body shop. So, that is where I am at now, and where my question comes from.
