I am having a hell of a time trying to find the answer to this question. I got a Palm TX for xmass and I really am having a hard time trying to figure it out, and this is the place that I always get a response. Here is the deal... I want to access wireless internet on my PDA, at college they have wireless internet. I search for the connection and find it, but when I connect I cannot just browse the web like I could on any old comeputer! Now I should not have to pay for anything since people can get the internet on campus with their laptops with no problem. Does anyone know what is going on here... What do I need that I do not have. I was told this PDA is top of the line. I just want to surf the net between classes. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Birdy

Birdy,

A lot of the time colleges require you to register your wireless devices MAC id on their network before they give you access. They may also the network password protected so you would need to find this out and enter the information before you will be allowed on their network. Do you know if your college does any of this?

I know all Panera Bread restaurants offer free wi-fi. Starbucks charges for theirs, but I hear they may go free as well. Can't imagine paying for wi-fi when somebody down the street offers it for free.

I have a Palm TX as well. I use it at home on my wi-fi network. I've heard of some people not being able to use it on campus because their network requires windows based pc's and handhelds. This might be your problem. If they have it secured, you'll need an authentication key.

Once I entered my wep key at home I was on the net. It's not the same as a reg pc because of the format but browsing is good.

first off, does the PDA even have a wireless antenna or something to recieve wireless transmissions.......

with alot of laptops you have to buy a wireless card to do this.....

fmarano, it does. It is built into the unit. I have a Palm PC that has the feature as well. Over all it works very good.

birdy,

Which college? Maybe we can find something on their website that might give us a clue (like if there's an authentication or pre-registration requirement).

I am running two PDA's with wireless now... Ipaq1940 with external SDIO card and Ipaq5450 with built in Wi-Fi.

I'm sure the Palms run a bit different but I had to go in and change several settings. The best thing to do is go to google or favorite search engine. Enter the model of your PDA and "wireless help". I found several help sites that had the information I needed.

I still can't use the built-in wireless to access the network at work, but I have no problems at home. The add on card has not issues at either location.

Surfing the net with PDA=slow and tedious. However, it's a good time killer and you can do it as necessary. I have a laptop with built in wireless that I use 99% of the time I am away from work anyway.
