Mookie.

Pretty impressive that the shaft was in such good shape to allow them to put on a new tire/rim and tow the plane to the hanger.

That says alot for the quality of the product. I can not think of a more abusive landing (short of destroying the landing gear), and it held up great in my opinion....

Yep, the landing gear is plenty strong...if they can only figure out how to keep the wheels pointed in the fight direction (Airbus A320).

The pilot has control of the tv. I saw a report that it was the pilots discretion to shut down the tv's and he decided the situation was not severe enough to turn them off of the live feed of their own news story. The pilot also used the news feed to examine the landing gear below the plane for himself.

I used to work as an Electrical Engineer for American Airlines. I've seen enough stuff that would scare many people out of flying commercial. I've also seen some pretty impressive damage to engines and aircraft (in particular, I've seen pictures of a 757 that looked like a banana from a "hard landing").

Being that the hubs were made from either aluminum alloy (more than likely) or magnesium alloy, it's not surprising that they were ground down as they were. The hardend steel alloy of the front strut would more than likey bounced around on the runway or caught and dug into the concrete. With all the weight moved to the rear, it is unlikely that the aircraft would have summersaulted. At best, the front gear would have collapsed under the weight and the nose of the plane would have been running down the runway.

Still an amazing piece of flying.

R Shek,

I would bet 1 grand the wheels were Aluminum. They don't use magnesium that often anymore on aircraft wheels. When they do, the wheels look like crap compared to the aluminum.
