Aloha, I went to NAPA yesterday to get a Pureolator oil filter to stop the clatter on start up in the mornings. The fellow there said theirs were made by Wix! Then I was thinking about the valve inside to prevent leak back into the sump. Since the filter is mounted upside down, how can any oil leak out? I feel that I am missing something here but don't know what.

Thanks in advance for your help Ed

Very true, although Ford uses the same filter on other vehicles where it is mounted sideways. I agree with Doug though, try a Motorcraft FL-820S and see if it gets rid of the start-up clatter. I am not aware that Purolator filters are made by Wix, but I know that the NAPA brand filters are. NAPA Gold filters are the good ones. I have used Wix and NAPA Gold filters on several of my family's vehicles without incident.

Please remember, a "will fit" oil filter that comes up as a cross reference of another mnufacturer is ALWAYS a gamble. No matter who the filter is made by - Mobile, WIX, Baldwin, Fram, etc..

Whether you are looking at the drain back valve, the media, the pressure / volume specs... remember this - a will fit filter is referencing the threads on the mounting and the sealing face dementions on the block ONLY!!!

Caterpillar, Cummins, Volvo all warn their customers that just because they can find a filter that will fit, they risk serious engine damage if they use other than OEM parts. When you have a $100,000 engine, you just don't mess with things like this.

The Motorcraft filter is cheap! and available at Wally World.

Why do we even have these discussions?

Some people automatically assume that something other than OE is "better" (not saying that's the case with OP) and some people boycott Wal-Mart.

Sometimes OE is better. Sometimes aftermarket is better.

All's I know is that the Grand Am my wife used to have would rattle on start-up if I had ANY filter other than an AC on it.

Only exceptions I've seen here for aftermarket replacement OEM parts are suspension and brake related.

Thanks for your reply's guys. (I like that dead horse icon) I have gone to Ford for filters, no help with the clatter. Maybe it was a bad one!!! I'll try another, Wall Mart here only carries Fram. If the Motorcraft still clatters, I'll go to NAPA Gold. What about the upside down filter and leak back? The oil can't drain out of the filter.

Tks Ed

Napa Gold filters are Wix filters.I have used wix for years and thats all I use. Every once in a while I still get the clatter...

Also, remember the words of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1974: a manufacturer cannot deny warranty service simply because you have an aftermarket part. They have to prove that the part caused the problem. In the case of replacement filters, etc, they cannot void your warrant because you have an aftermarket filter if they do not provide their own replacement filters for free.

If your vehicle is out of warranty, then use what ever filter you want that works best for you. Most of the hype about what is the better filter is just that hype. Of course there are a lot of cheap budget filters that barely meet the manufacturers spec's and if you change your oil every 3K-5K miles they will probably get by. If you used synthetic oil and want to take advantage of the exteneded oil life and change oil every 10K-15k miles then by all means spend a few extra dollars and get a quality filter that will hold up as long as the synthetic oil.

Years ago it use to be common for people to change the oil filter at every other oil change. Then as the oil got better people started to change only the filter half way throught the life cycle of the oil because the oil outlasted the filters capacity to hold more dirt. Now you can find filters that will last the entire life cycle of the new extended mileage synthetic oils.
