Putting oil in an oil filter

I've been reading about oil changes on the site and someone said that it good to fill the new oil filter before you put it on. My question is: do you fill it from the 5 qts your going to put in the engine or do you put extra oil into the filter?

Put part of one quart in the filter and screw the filter onto the engine. Put the rest of that quart and four more quarts into the engine.

On a Trac it's easy to do because the filter goes on straight up.

That being said, I never bother.

I usually fill my filter enough to get the filter media wet with oil.
