question about radio

just a quick question when wiring up a powered sub to the stock head unit do you need anything special. my buddy told me i need a modulator. i am not sure so any help will be appecated.

You need a low level line inverter, is what I believe it's called, or something like that. You basically tap off like the two rear door speakers, then run to the amp. It's basically a filter that will only let through the frequency you set. Walmart has them for around $20 last time I checked.
 
Jeff C, isn't that inverter designed to convert the high level inputs to RCA outputs also? I believe Scosche makes it?
 
It can do either. You set the frequency you want to pass, as well as the gain, and a few other settings.
