The cover is nothing more than just that, a cover...

Some of them do have a drain plug in them which does make it easier when you want to change out your fluid. Others have cooling fins on them which does bring the temp down just a bit.

There are a few out there that increase the volume size as well. So there are some gains to be had but no real advantage as far as performance and what not...

There is a benifit from the preload ajustments you can put on the differential carrier bearing caps for added cap strenth..that is what it was designed for...a drain plug and easier acess fill plug is the added benifit....unless your race or put a heavy load on the carrier bearings you wont need it...

Depending on the cover....

1. Axle runs cooler because of more lube capacity and the fins, maybe an issue if you drag a trailer across the country, otherwise no.

2. A heavy steel cover can take a whack off-roading better.

3. A drain plug is nice.

4. If you get this one, people will think you're really cool.

what are the chances that they make one for the trac, AND the company is still in business.

The heavy duty covers benefit you for towing, off road, hard driving and racing. For every day "normal" use they allow you drain and fill the fluid easily for maintenance.

The Pre load screws place a load on the bearing caps so under a load when they flex that over time this doesn't destroy the rearend.

Here is a $800 rear blown to bits without a cover.. AS you can see in the pic the bearing cap bolts are still in the rear and no sign of the caps them selves....

I know I will be adding one soon...

TRS was making a sweet cover but the guy who builds them had eye surgery and he's not back to it yet. Summit, Jeg's, 4 Wheel Parts, Ford Racing, all should have something.

On high performance cars, it is frequently recommended that you install an after market cover, as it will help the pumpkin maintain it's shape when putting a great deal of power on the ground.....

I don't think it is a big deal on the ST, but when towing, it may be a bit of added security........
