I was wondering what that noise was!!!

I didn`t know the 4.0 had a rear timing chain.

It makes a sort of rattle at idle but goes away

at a slightly higher idle. Is there something other

than a rebuild, that can help this???

Thanks ZABinater.

I have not looked into a repair, AN engine rebuild is not needed...

I stepped up to 10w30 motor oil and it helped alot...

BUT with my mods the idle is down to 500,,, too low, Once I get my replacement Xcal I will have the idle raised to 900 or so and the noise will be gone..

Rear timing chain cartrige can be changed with out a rebuild. I dont even think the engine needs removal. I had this done to my trac, and about 2 weeks later the rattle was back. I have no idea why this is such a problem, it has been ongoing with me. I have had my sport trac at 3 different dealerships, for 3 seperate instances of the rattle. All have done work under warranty, but now it expired, and rattle continues at start-up. So all I can say is good luck. And remember the slogan....Ford- Quality is job one:angry:

You could always replace both the front and rear chain tensioners. They are both fairly easy to get access to.

Though, the signs of the chain rattle is at start-up and goes away within a few minutes.
