Trying to decide on ONE efficient charity to donate to. Will potentially be collecting from many people so it's important that I find one that is efficient with a high donation:victim percentage. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Seems to me that the Red Cross is the main organization leading most of the rest. If your city is recieving evacuees you may look into whos taking them in and donate to them directly if they are not funded by FEMA.

Here is a list of charities. The percentage listed at the end of each description shows the organization's administrative and fundraising expense rate.

Here's an idea for one that's not on the list that Nelson provided:

The Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society. There are many Sailors that were impacted by Katrina. There are several Navy bases on the Mississippi gulf coast, and a huge Navy personnel command and the Navy Reserve Command in New Orleans. The Navy and Marine Corps Relief society exist to specifically help Sailors and Marines in times of need, and I'm sure their resources are being severly taxed right now. I will give money to my church. We have a few sister congregations that were affected. 100% of our donations will go to their aid. Can't do better than that. Plus, I then know that the money will actually be use for aid, not for beer and cigarrettes.
