Ok so after I get my lift in and my 35s on I'm going to want to regear... what I would like to know is what ring and pinion would be suitable replacements for the front and rear and also if anyone has some pics of changing gears or knows where I can get an idea as to what I'm gonna be getting into on the inside of the pumpkins that would be great:supercool:

I was looking on randys ring and pinion and aparently they have a 4.88 for the front dana 35 but I've heard that the 4.88 wont fit is that true?

IMO, with 35" tires. If you cant get close to 5.00 gears or above. You will loose alot of low end power. You will see a large jump in rpms, just to get rolling. Also your city gas milage will drop below 10. No matter how you drive. JMO

4.56 is the lowest that fit into a D35, though. 5.13 would be great except having your RPMs screaming at highway speeds...but they don't fit anyway. 4.88 seems to be the ticket, but again, don't fit the D35.

For the record, my gas mileage isn't below 10 city (by my rough guesstimations) and it has everything to do with the way I drive.

Hugh,

The sad thing is 4.56 from 4.10 is not a wortwhile jump IMO. Especialy with 35" tires.

I other cars I have built. I jumped tire from 26" to 27". gears from 2.73 to 3.27.

What a waste. Nonthing gained in power tq multiplication. I should have geared for 3.73.

I sujest he think of a shorter tire.

Yeah, i have the 4:56 Ft and Rear. Changing from the OEM 4:10 with that tire will probably set you back at 3:73 Ratio....

As said you need the larger gear 4:88 or higher...They make 4:88 for the Dana.... And for the rear if you have 4:11 now you have the better pin if your a LSD, IF open diff you need the pin, BUT honestly man, save the bucks and put a locker, or Motorsport Cobra 8.8 posi in there and make it more fun !!

The guys at DTS have been great to mke for my needs. i did mine my self, Went with a motorsport r/p for the rear and richmond for the FT, QUIEt and no noise !!!

Call DTS and see if they know of a different gear for the D35.

Ok, I think I remember what the problem with 4.88s is. It's not the Dana, it's just the read diff cover doesn't clear. I think there is still some debate as to which aftermarket covers actually clear but some have ordered ones that are "supposed" to clear but still had to grind down for some clearance. If I have time later, I'll find where that information is coming from since I don't have any first hand knowledge of this, I'll try to give credit to those wiser than me.

I have 4:56 gears in my truck with 35's. My truck has the same low end torque as it did with the 4:10's. It revs about 2400-2600 RPM @ 70 MPH. I used some calculators I found online and according to what I read and calculated my truck thinks it still has the dinky little stock tires on it. From personal experience I would put 4:56 gears in my truck again, the difference is more then you think. And if you drive on the highway they are perfect for 35's. 4.88's would be good with 36 or 37's.

As for the MPG; if your concerned about that, you dont need to put big tires on it. The 4.0 is already a small and shitty motor for these trucks. The mileage is more affected by the weight of the tires more than the diameter. Because once you get rolling, you have forward momentum, that is why these trucks suck gas from stop lights with big tires.

4.88 gears fit front and rear, you have to do a little grinding inside the front diff for the ring gear, and the rear ring gear needs a couple teeth ground down on the inside radius to allow the pin to slide into the carrier. Both of these are no big deal.
