Someone definitely needs to explain about contraceptives to them. They must have to take out a loan for christmas presents every year.

TomT...they are "highly religious"...that often means homemade/modest gifts and a recognition that "Jesus is the Reason for the Season", not commercialization and a lot of store-bought gifts.

STU, you read that right. But that's number's rounded off--it's actually higher. 15 pregnancies x 9 months per pregnancy = 135, which is 11.25 years. 11.25/40 (her age) = 28%+. Even if you assume she's nearly 41, that's 11.25/41 = 27%+.

The number that I found most surprising--other than the fact that they have 17 @#$%ing children, is that they go through 6 gallons of milk a week. My family only has four in it (for the moment--will be going to five sometime in the next two weeks), we're not that heavy of milk drinkers, and we still go through a gallon a day. 19 people (especially with most of them being children) would typically be going through at least 16, not 6, gallons a week! Maybe it's a typo. After all, the article says they have 17 kids, but in the paragraph where it lists all their names, there are only 16 listed...

TJR, it's not whole--at least, not for the three of us. It's always skim, except for our one year old son, who gets the whole milk that pediatricians recommend from the time breast feeding ends until approximately age 2. The extra fat aids in brain development. And not all of the skim is drank--it is also used for cooking, baking, etc.

And let's see--They have 17 kids, they're from Arkansas, and his name is "Jim Bob". Given that, I think that saying they're "highly religious" is a bit redundant. :)

Bill V, that's not as bad then. Just be careful, many people feed their kids way too much milk assuming it's healthy. Studies the past two decades indicate otherwise (until next year, when they reverse themselves, so what's a parent to do...)

I've followed this story on Discovery Channel, or one of those channels, since there

were ONLY 12 children! The mom and dad do work hard at several jobs and/or businesses,

and the oldest children help and are being taught responsibility, and it seems the younger

ones have good role models! It is not the norm, I might agree!

I had many questions myself when I first heard of this family and their story, but it seems

after following it for a few years, all of them have been answered for the better.

Good Luck to 'em ALL!:D

Is Milk really that good for you? Besides the vitamins and calcium, which you can get from other sources, the thought of all the chemicals and hormones they feed those Milk cows...scary.

Just like we don't by beef from a grocery store either. All comes from a butcher shop. Ground beef from one steer not a melting pot of cows.
