My girlfriend’s son was driving her SportTrac. He was leaving an intersection when the Trac went into limp mode and started spewing “smoke” from under the hood. Could be smoke, could be steam-he didn’t know. He had it towed to a dealership.

The technician found a faulty ECT sensor with a P0117 code and a #1 misfire with a P0316 code. The tech replaced the spark plugs, wires, and ECT sensor. Didn’t fix the problem.

Compression test showed low on #1 and number four is “weak”. Tech recommends replacing engine with remanufactured.

Do you have any thoughts on this? That feels like quite a jump to me. #4 cylinder wasn’t throwing a code. I think we should look at the head gasket?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

I often wondered about replacing a run-out V-6 with one of the later pushrod 4.0L V-6s. I know there are sensors that would not be there, so a new/used wiring harness and ECM would probably be necessary. My son replaced the 2.9L V-6 in his Bronco II with the 4.0L from a 90s Aerostar along with the ECM and engine harness. Way beyond my capability, but he was a USCG Avionics Tech. He rebuilt the engine with a Comp Cam, World Products heads and some JB headers. He reworked the rocker arms with stainless steel cups and plugged the ends so the pushrods would actually get oil. That is a strong engine! It has also proven to be quite reliable over the last 20 years.
