Aloha Guys,

My wife's Jeep was spurting on a cold start, so I changed the Idle control valve. Now it starts better but not smoothly until about 30 seconds running. The valve came from Amazon. Could it be a bad one? Someone suggested that it may be a bad head gasket. Is there a test for anti freeze in the exhaust? It does seem to be loosing a slight bit of water!

Opinions are greatly appreciated. Ed

If enough coolant gets into the exhaust. You will have white smoke.

As for the head gasket do a compression leak down test. Maybe you can save some $ if you can borrow one.

There is a test for exhaust gases in the radiator. You can borrow the tester from advanced auto. You have to buy the chemical but its not expensive. Test is easy to do.

Disconnect the Battery for 10min and let it relearn with the new valve, its still using the old look up tables in the processor for start up

Tks roamer, that is the cheapest, I'll try that first. I don't think that any exaust is getting to the radiator. The other way round.

God bless Ed

Check for signs of coolant into crankcase: foamy substance under oil filler cap, residue on dipstick. If your oil level is increasing then coolant's going into the sump. A small amount of glycol can destroy the engine bearings very quickly, so don't wait. If you want to be sure, an oil analysis will confirm.

It sure will. I had a plymouth with a 318. The coolant passage thru the timing chain cover leaked. I fixed it. But 200miles latter I turned an insert.

Pulled the motor and did a complete rebuild. Back in the day when a reconditioned crank and bearings, gasket kit. My total cost was less than $150. I wonder what that would be today.

I dont pull motors anymore though. Last one was the 302 cobra(not stock). I installed in my '94 stang. The $$ involved I lost count..LOL Had over $10k extra in it.

Thanks Vic,

I miss that car. The buyer rolled it into a ditch 4months after he bought it. Knowing the hours and $$ I put in, hurt.
