I could see where they could easily be disoriented and walk out the passengers side and then have an even worse day..

I disagree. That guys is the luckiest guy in the world. I would have bought a lottery ticket on the way to the hospital.

You'd be amazed at the time it takes to get new construction contracts through the system. I had a project to put 10 miles of concrete barrier between east and westbound I-10 in Sealy Texas last year. They told me it was several years between when someone started to push for it and when we got the contract. We found major debris next to the new rails several times, and new smudges on the concrete almost daily.

TxDOT has a design for a rail that I think should go in a spot like that. It's about 5 feet tall, and made of reinforced concrete. No one should be able to go over the rail next to a drop like that.

How many of you drive through the mountains next to 500 ft. drops with no rails at all?

TJR, if you're looking at the same debris as I am, don't you suspect that it got washed through the culvert to get there--and isn't from other accidents?

I've driven on roads like that before. There is a back way into Aspen that twists and turns along the side of a mountain. The last time I went through there, a minivan crashed over the side killing around six people an hour after I went through (it has been a long time since it happened so I don't remember the exact number of people).

The scariest drive like that was through a mountain pass between Iskenderun and Antakya, Turkey back in the late 1990s. Back then it was a two-lane road and the stupid truck drivers were passing each other on blind curves. If I had come around a bend and met up with one of them, I had a choice between hitting a huge cargo truck head-on or driving off the cliff. I would have chose the head-on crash, but then the truck would probably push me off the cliff anyway. Oh well, it would have been quick. They've since widened the road and added guard rails.
