I may be late but I just thought of this.

If Vice President Chaney had shot Dan Qual, somebody would call "FOWL"!

I know, I know, getting shot is not funny, but.

The FOWL line made it to the news in about 6 minutes after I had posted it....

What a great opportunity for all the comedians out. Just a wealth of ammunition, pun intended..

Saw where the guy had a heart attack. I think from what I've heard and experience from hunting the blame falls on both involved.

Ummm.... The person who is behind the trigger is the one to blame. Nobody else. Period. That is rule #1 in gun safety. Know your backstop. That means look past what you are shooting at BEFORE you shoulder the weapon. Any doubts, don't even take the safety off. I learned that when I was 6 years old and 1st learning to shoot... Now please don't think this is Bush/Chaney bashing. It isn't...what he did was just stupid and irresponsible gun handling.

Did you know Birdshot is often used in crowd control at during riots (like tear gas). I think the press is over the top again.

Definitely the shooter fault and no one elses.... you have to look, many animals got away from me because I was just not sure where the boys were at and I had to hesitate... Oh well.

How could something like this happen? Doesn't Cheney know anything about gun safety?

Timmy-in-Vegas,

I thought crowd control used rubber pellets, not like the metallic pellets found in hunting shells.

But yes, they both can kill you.

Riot shot shells are a small pellets(#9 or smaller) and use a type of wadding that quickly spreads the shot as soon as it leaves the barrel. Riot guns usually have no choke or tightening of the barrel near the muzzle(which helps to concentrate the shot into a tighter circle). The power of a riot shell can vary, depending on the shell. The idea is to get as wide a pattern of pellets as possible as soon as the charge leaves the barrel. Close range, it is as deadly as any other gun.

This is quite different than a quail hunting shell and gun. Those that were probably used had 7 1/2 or 8 shot and a slight choke(improved cylinder?) as well as more power in the shell. Also, the wadding used is made to keep a much tighter pattern of shot out to 40 yards or so. This setup will produce a pattern of shot that will be bad news to anyone close by. I know from personal experience that at 80 yards, #6 shot from a hi-brass(power) shell and a gun with a modified choke(pheasant or rabbit load) will penetrate a canvas hunting coat.
