The past two days my internet on certain sites (IE.= ESPN, AVG, MSN) have been slow. Extremely slow. I've never had the problem before. Scanned for virus and everything is all clear. My startpage is MSN and it never completes loading. I have all the pics and the page looks fine except the bar at the bottom of the screen and the little page on the upper right corner is still moving. No matter how long it sets it never completes. Also, when I turn my computer on, everything looks fine except right before windows starts I get a screen that asks what version do I want to run. (Windows Media Edition or Recovery Consol) It did this once before and I was able to get it to quit aking but can't remember how I did it. Any sugestions?

ps- this site works fine. No problems. And I'm on DSL.

Your provider could be having some infrastructure issues. Go to their website, look for their

"support" page and see if they have any system outages or system maintenance going on.

Send them a support email with a list of sites you are seeing slowdowns from.

You might have a malware/spyware infestation.

Download, install, and run both Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware. Make sure after you download and install them that you update their definition files before you run them.

I would suggest dumping all of the cached files if you are using IE (Tools|Internet Options|Delete Files). That will clear out any zombie files you have in there. Make sure your install CD/DVD is not still in the drive, otherwise Windows Media Edition will try to boot off of that, giving you the restore option.

Did do an Adware SE scan. Nothing. I'll have to do the Spybot S&D when I get home. I do scan regularly. Every Sun. to be exact and check for updates every time I turn the computer on. (just a habit) Just seems lately (past 2-3 days) I have had a problem with my AVG Antivirus being slow to update. It usually takes about 3 sec. to check and download my updates. I'll keep an Eye on it.

eledhel, my daughter left a cdrom (not a boot cd, it was a game) in the drive and I didn't notice it till after I booted the computer up. Since then it has that extra screen asking me what do I want to run, WME or restore. Nothing I do gets rid of it. Any ideas?;)

stonemiser,

As previously stated, there may be an infastructer problem. I had a client in the Tucson, Arizona area that has a local ISP with a backup server in Seattle, WA. Whe his local ISP has problems, everyone gets routed to the alternate server in Seattle which inserts a noticable delay.

Many times there are problems with the most direct path and the Internet has to make alternate connections to route around the breakdown and these alternate connections or frequently much, much slower. Sometimes there are bottle necks on the Internet du to the volume of traffic. That's why the US is looking at building another high-speed, limited access Internet to be able to handle high resolution medical images, etc.

Thanks Rich. I think that is the problem with the internet. Especially when it is cirtain sites. This site works fine. I click on something and it pops up. I go to try to do my picks on Baseball Challenge on ESPN and it freezes. MSN takes forever to completely load, then some of the other sites in my favorites come right up. Also tested my connection with Verizon and it's right where it should be.

Now if I could get my computer to boot up correctly without asking me what to do. (that's what I get for letting my kids play on it.);)

I had a report from Network Solutions yesterday that they were having some DNS and other problems. Network Solutions is the Main registrar for .COM websites in the USA...

Have you tried powering off/on your DSL modem? Mine is a Speedstream 5100 and about once a month or so I notice some slowdowns or simply no response. I power it off for 20 secs or so, then power it back on. It re-syncs and grabs a new IP address which seems to fix the problem.
