I keep getting a Check Engine Light weekly and when I checked it out it's someone about a Small Leak in the gas system.

This is after 2 things I've done. 1 is a drop in K&N air filter and the other is the box under the bed over the spare tire.

Id assume it was the that box that I pulled down and cleaned everything and put it back up double checking all the connections ( When I installed the rear shocks ).

The light stays off for days at a time and then the Engine light comes on just cruising down the highway and when I reset it stays off for days. Any help on replacing or double checking anything? Thanks -Sam

Sam- Most A/P stores have readers that can give you a PO code for no obligation, or charge.

(The CSK O'Reilly Stores do in Hawaii, anyway)

That would isolate your CE light to fewer possible symptoms.

I bet it's related to the filter box you removed, changing the left rear shock.

Good Luck Bro!

One thing to check out, as the Explorers have become notorious for, is a rubber elbow in your PCV valve hose. It will be on the passenger side of the engine coming off of the plenum and running around the back of the engine and into the valve cover. That rubber elbow will detereriate in time and collapse. I got a new one from a ford dealer for $35.00 for the whole line with the elbow. here is a link to the ford parts page, click the "view image" button to see what it is. The part number is 6758.

I can't guarentee that is problem, but this is what happened to me and it's worth checking out !

Try checking the pcv elbow, also the gas cap's o-ring gets pressed too far onto the shaft. Take your key and move the o-ring up the shaft then put it back on the truck, I do this at every fill-up, don't have any problems.

Also check the ring on the Gas Tank filler cap. Mine gave me a code a while ago. I took it off Cleaned it. Reset the computer then it was gone.

Easy fixin at NO cost...

I think I will replace the whole elbow and play with the gas cap. Thanks for the info much appreciated!

Sam,

I had the same exact issue when I changed the shocks! One of the vent line wasnt connected good. I checked the other things first (elbow & gas cap) but the end result was having to drop that air box again and there was the issue.
