I went with the emblem mounted camera, allot of work though, required cutting, and some refinishing of the tailgate, not a simple task.
I agree with the above post about painting textured/smooth surface. It makes no difference, if anything (in my experience) smooth surfaces are more difficult to get a quality finish on. The textured surface provides forgiveness to the finish, and more bonding area.
Don't be shy about trying the paint, it isn't that tough, just follow the directions of where you buy it. Maybe find something around the house (of a similar material) to practice on first, a guinea pig.
My local NAPA has a guy in house that makes one off color matched spray bombs. He always does a great job. I have followed his directions and have always been happy with the results. I would not recommend a generic 'color match', it needs to be pretty much a perfect match sitting in the middle of your tailgate. If it's off by much it will stick out like a soar thumb.
It's plastic, so be sure to use an adhesion promoter. A good high build primer (a couple of extra coats might deal with a light texturing too if that's a visual concern), a quality color matched paint and a couple of layers of clear coat to finish it off.
Probably the most challenging task is fishing the wiring down through an opening in the bottom of the tailgate and then through the spare tire crank hole in the bed to run it up front. Don't leave it too tight and make sure it's not going to get pinched.
I would strongly recommend wearing a mask too, even outdoors. Spray paints, especially automotive grade, are loaded with some nasty stuff.
