So who has a copy for me that I can have?.........LOL

Not quite free, but OEM versions can be bought for as low as $30.

Yeah, yeah, some will turn their noses at OEM, but it's legal and I have never had an issue with it...

TJR,

It is not legal to sell OEM software without the purchase of a computer. That's what makes it OEM. This is software that is sold to computer manufacturers at a discount to be bundled with the purchase of a computer.

I bought a copy of Adobe Paintshop a few years ago at a discounted price. I got suspicious when it said it was OEM had no documentation, and a note inside said it could not be registered, and not supported by Adobe? I contacted Adobe and they said it was illegal, and asked me to contact BSI Group who investigate software piracy and license vilolations. I spoke with an attorney who confirmed it was illegal to sell OEM software without the purchase of a computer. He wanted a statement as to where I got it, a copy of the receipt and the CD as he asked

I contacted my credit card company and had them remove the charge off my credit card, which they did.

Buying a HDD from a reseller, under some OEM licences, will make OEM software legal.

Honestly, if Adobe can sell the same program for $30.00 as an OEM version to be bundled with a new computer, there is no reason they could not sell the same software in a retail box for the same price...and still make money.

I try to buy everything I can OEM in regards to computing. Saves me $;). System builders qualify for all OEM specs. Let them keep the retail boxes and do their part in saving earth:).

Wow, did I open a can of worms?......sorry guys, was just wanting a free copy, WHICH of course is illegal, also. So, I guess I need to retract my question, huh?......LOL

Thanks for the info though.

Caymen is correct. You can get OEM software bundled with HDD, CD/DVD drives, and other computer hardware.

RichardL, correct, some OEM software can be illegal, and anything that ships without hardware or with instructions that it cannot be registered should be considered suspect.

But most OEM software is legit. I have bought plenty of OEM versions of operating systems, some stamped with Dell or Gateway logo, through liquidation houses. They invariably show up at my door with some piece of hardware in the box...an old dongle, and old vga card, a corded mouse...hardware that is worthless, but included to allow the sale to be legit.

The problem with most OEM I have found is that you get no technical support from the manufacturer. Normally shipped with a new CPU, you would get support from them vs say Microsoft.
