So, long story short. Last weekend I had severe back pain after squatting down in the kitchen to get a bowl. Barely able to walk, had to have my dad and father-in-law help be to the van to take me to the ER. 3 doses of Dilaudid and Toredol later, I went home in slightly less pain. Spent the week in bed switching between ice and heat and finally able to get around fairly well on Saturday. So.... what do you back pain sufferers suggest? I have always been a good stretcher, in good shape, just keep having events like this every couple years. What do I do about it? Chiropractor, surgery, or what? Doc thinks it is a bulging disc. Where do I go from here?

Whiskey and beer.

I've had chronic back pain since a young age. It's only truly affected me 2-3 times. Chriopracty (sp?) didn't help I'm able to do the same thing myself in bed or on the floor.. No doctor has ever found anything actually wrong with my back, so I just deal with it for now, we'll see how that pans out as I get older (29).

I've had a lower back injury (sacroiliac/ sacrum joint) since 2004. No standing or sitting and sometimes laying down for as little as an hour length without pain. I gotta move. I have been in pain ever since and, unfortunately, will always have problems. When I have severe pain, I usually head to the chiropractor for a reallignment accompanied with heat and electro therapy on the injury. Usually good for a couple weeks. Not much PT can do for my injury. Even muscle relaxers and anti-inflamitories do very little to help ease the pain.

It is my understanding, that for a bulging disc, is to take pressure off of it. I have a friend that swears by one of those inversion (?) apparatus. One brand is the 'Teeter' brand. He says just by taking 5 minutes a day, has helped him tremendously. And feels 100% better since he started using his.

Back pain sucks! I hope you heal very soon!

Listen to your Doctor. He/she should know whats best.

What you do depends on what the cause is. Pulled muscle, disk or spine problems, or nerve problems. If it continues you are looking at something other than a muscle problem and are headed for a MRI to find out the cause. Over the last 4 years I have gone with steroid/cortisone shots in the spine. First one's lasted a year, second one about 6 months and the third never worked.

Rest - Move real slow. Good Luck

Pain is part of life, Misery is self induced.

One day three years ago I couldnt get out of bed, literally couldnt move or sit up from back pain. Called a chiropractor, got xrays, and started adjustments (with electro therapy for ease of pain.) Turns out my hips are WAY out of alignment and was creating lots of problems. He fit me with a lift insert for my shoes that I wear constantly. I now only go every couple months when I need to, and adjusts both the lower back and hip. For me I was glad I went when I did, it was something I never would of found, and would of made my future miserable. I didnt want to follow my mothers footsteps with having back surgery at 40! Good luck, chiropractic methods are something you could look into and decide from there if its a relief for you.

When it's not bad enough to go into the ER, try Doans back pills. I apparently have almost no cushion inbetween two of my lower disks, so I get a lot of pain. The Doans are about the only thing that make it more tollerable when I havea flair up.
