Aloha ya'll,

I finally got the jack and crank handle to lower the spare tire. So I scooted under there with a can of grease to free things up a bit and the system seems to be closed. How do we lubricate that cable and gearing?

Tks Ed

Won't silicone spray on dry preventing sand and dirt from adhering to the surface that is sprayed? I agree that grease will attach all sorts of things.

Yea, sorry. grease is a general word to me. I used white silicone spray. Maybe a little went inside, but over here everything rusts. (oxidizes)

Tks Ed

Here's one: I lowered the spare to fix a flat. After all was fixed, hooked up the spare and cranked it into position. Well three weeks later, I hit a decent bump on the parkway and the cable snapped and the spare was rolling around in traffic. It seems that instead of the cable rewinding in nice continuous coils, it got "overlapped" stressed the cable(weight of the spare) and it snapped. A silicone lubricant, protectant or rust preventer would seem in order. Just be real careful when cranking up that spare. Bob

real careful? Do you mean not to tight?

Snug only, just make sure as you rewind the cable that each coil lays next to the one before. It should look like a "coil Spring" and not a birds nest! Bob

The cable is stainless steel and should not rust or corrode, so there is really no point in lubricating it, especially with anything that will attract dirt and make it stick.

My only work of advise is to turn the tire around so that the valve stem is facing down so you can easily check the pressure and inflate the tire as necessary

I never knew about that until I put new tires on my 2001 as part of the Firestone recall, and the tire dealer said he installed the spare upside down for easier access to the valve stem.
