Had my spare tire stolen of my '04 while parked at the airport. Looks like they lowered the cable that held it in place in lieu of cutting-- nice thieves.

In the 5 years I have owned the truck I have never looked under the truck. What type of rim/tire is under there? Is it a temporary tire or a full size?

Thanks for any help.

Should've been a fullsize ( whatever size your truck was equipped with ) black steel spare rim and a Goodyear Wrangler RTS tire most were 255/70/16's. Is your insurance gonna cover it or are you just goone go to junkyard and get a replacement? Most airports won't cover something like that because you park at your own risk in most cases.

That sucks man.....

Probably some jerks with a ST or ranger or similar ford with the tools and either had a flat or stole it...

Mark--thought about the junkyard as an option, but may just go new if the price isn't too bad. I like to spoil my ST. :)

I have a $500 deductible, so won't involve insurance.

Look on Craigslist, I find brand take off's for dirt cheap as well as wheels/tires for the ST, Ranger, Etc.. You could go to the junkyard and pull the spare off of a Ranger, ST, etc. and it's 90% of the time either a brand new tire or the original that hasn't even been touched. Just a couple options. Good luck with the search.

.....and if you can pick up an alloy wheel/tire combo it will save you a few pounds of dead weight. I put an alloy under mine. Can I tell any difference ...........no, but it sounds reasonable!:haveabeer:

The crown vic wheels, up to 02 I think, are the same as the ranger/explorer/st spares and are usually pretty cheap. I picked up 4 for $100.

Dave,

If you have comprehensive insurance with $0 deductible and you got a police report your insurance company should pay for the replacement without a raise in your rates.

Check your policy.

Aluminium vs. Steel argument.

Steel is heavier than aluminium is. Aluminium needs to be thicker than steel is for the same strength. In many cases, steel wheels are lighter than aluminium is simply because less material is used to get the same strength.

I am not saying this is the case here since I have never compared the weight of each, but it could be true.

Heck, come steal mine, I'm insured:grin:. It has a brand new 8 year old 255/70 General Grabber on it. I'll leave it on the ground behind it. I'm using an alloy wheel with a worn out Michelin for a spare.
