It was mentioned that I have to bring the truck in the night before to have the spark plugs cracked and a shot of fluid to break down the carbon over night. Then the plugs can be removed. It was suggested also to have the latest codes down loaded at a cost of 5o dollars.

What do you think ? Can the program be checked to see if it is the same as the software upgrade ?

If you are handy. You can do the plugs your self. They are on top of the motor. You can loosen them in the morning. Spray penetrent. Change them after lunch. Save $$$

Than let the dealer upgrade the lastest programing. I would find out what that is. If it is related tp the trans. They should do it for free.

Thanks Eddie for the info. I was going to have my dealer do it but almost everything they have done has been a medium cluster. I think I'll do it myself as well as most of the other maintenance.

What plugs are reconmmended to use as replacements...I see the XP appears to be a top of the line. I like to hear someone give their experiences since I had 2 bad experiences with Bosch Platinums back in the 90's.

IMO, you cant go wrong with the double plats. The xp may be over kill $$ for street service. The double plats will hold thier gap until the plugs have grown weak.

Edit; back in the '90s bosch heat ranges were not exact enough for some US motors.

I stay away from them myself.

Spark plugs are easy on this engine. 99.99% of people make it out to be more than it actually is. I have said it before and I will say it again...I have done literally hundreds of spark plug changes on the 3 valve motors and have not had one single issue removing a spark plug and I don't loosen them and then spray anything in the holes...just make sure that you have the approproiate socket for these.

As far as getting the pcm updated....if you are not experiencing any issues leave well enough alone or you may have issues after it is all said and done. If you are having issues make 100% positive that the update specifically addresses the issue that you are experiencing and that there is not an underlying issue casuing it, most important thing to remember is just becasue ther is an update that solves a problem does not mean that it is going to solve your issue if you have the same problem.

wayne,

you won't be able to put your trac in a situation where you could tell the difference.

I would go with the Platnium Motorcraft plug, like what came in it, or a Bosch plug.

Just replaced my plugs this weekend. I went quick and easy with the Autolite HT1 plugs. The plug change eliminated a low RPM hesitation that had popped up in recent weeks.

Next on the list is the alternator...the battery light has been popping up about once a day.
