I am getting ready to hit the 70K mark on my 02 4x4. Does anyone have recommendations on the best spark plugs on the market and would this be a good time to replace them?

There aren't really any "best" plugs. Use the stock motorcraft plugs as they are as good as your going to get for the trac. Avoid any Bosch +4 type stuff other members haven't had good luck with them. Now is a fine time to change them, and don't forget to use anti-seize.

Either Motorcraft or Autolite. Bosch +2 and +4's do not get along well with the Ford ignition system.

I replaced my stock plugs at about 65,000 miles. The gap was at over .070". IIRC, stock gap is .054".

They should be replaced sooner than the recommended 100,000 miles.

Just got Autolite APP103's and Taylor 8.2mm wires. Will install at 80k miles [about 650 left to go] when I change oil and rotate tires. They say plugs are good for 100k miles but my experience has been that even though they still work, performance has degraded noticeably. Engine doesn't start quite as fast. First few seconds of idle might be a bit rough. Fuel economy is degrade. All of these changes are so gradual that we hardly notice them. As gap grows the plugs will still be fine until, one day, the gap is just too big and then we feel the problem. I'd rather change them earlier than to wait for that day as my son-iin-law did with his Escort...it would barely run. New plugs and wires and it was like new.
