Got this e-mail from my mom this morning, I searched myself and my wife and removed our names. Just an FYI in case others here don't want this stuff found easy.

There's a site called Spokeo.com(google it) that's a new online USA phone book w/ personal information such as pics you've posted on FB, your approx credit score, home value, income age, family members, even cc #'s. Remove yourself by searching your name, find your page, copy the URL and go to the bottom of the home page and click on the Privacy link to remove yourself. Copy & re-post!

Hugh, is that 180K listed under the house and dollar sign? I thought that might have been home value. I also found my name listed with my work address, and I clicked on it three times and that value changed all three times, from 65K to 192K to 156K. I wonder how accurate the information is when you pay for their service.

I don't know. Now it says $505k. It's actually my dad's information since we have the same name (late grandfather as well in PA). He is not on any social networks and barely uses the internet. This information is out there whether this site aggregates it or not.

I had two guys at work check it out and neither one was on there, one's wife was on there under her maiden name and home address. I also found my name with my work address. All of us are on Facebook so it's not just because of social media sites. My mom is on there and she's rarely on the internet. Snopes has a write up on it as well.

My hobbies are "Reading Pets". How does one "read pets" ? Is that literal or abstract, like a dog whisperer?



This isn't too terribly useful. Sadly, most of my friends aren't on this. I think I'm dragged in by association, as so many of my friends and family have facebook, and so even though I don't have a facebook account, my info is out there.



The privacy link is really skeevy. "If you want to protect your info, you HAVE to use this paid service we've partnered with. But, if you're a cheapskate, we can remove your info from our page, which kinda-sorta-not-really protects your info."

You can also remove your Spokeo listing from public searches for free.

So, what's a private search? Is a private search constituted when you pay for access to Spokeo? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

This kind of information has been around for years, even years before Al Gore invented the Internet (joke). It, like so much more, is now so much easier for the masses to get to than before, because of the Internet.

It's all public record, or you put it on the internet yourself.. It's just a specialized search engine.



What I find interesting is that it found me at our old house in WA (rental) but doesn't have the house that we own in VA under either me or my wife. My wife basically doesn't exist on it, and I only have a real old address from when I "lived" with my mom while in college, and then the WA address. A lot happened in between those times and its all missing.

When I try to remove myself. It keeps going back to the code,capthca insertion. I have tried With caps and minors no luck.

It has me living in pasadena under the name Eddie. Also has living @ coldsprings, moms house. Under my given name, James...?????????????

Cant remove either...I think they used the privacy setting to get my email addy..dumb

Has another entry for my current address with the wife and daughter. The daughter has never lived at my current address.

When I removed my name it prompts back to that screen in case you want to delete another name, but they do send you an e-mail that you have to click on to fully remover your e-mail. Check your e-mail to see if they sent it to you.

I supose I need to remove my x and my folks from it now.

I think I know now why my mom gets my junk mail and I get hers. Same with my X.
