2002 with 91,xxx miles. On the way home yesterday the CEL came on (blinking) and the truck started running rough. I was about 5 miles from home so I decided to limp it there. A mile or so later and the truck flat out died - luckily going downhill and near a side street I could pull off on! I tried to start it again and nothing happened. Got it towed to the mechanic.

Just heard from the mechanic. the CEL code was a misfire from cylinder 2. He pulled the plug and the bottom of the plug was gone. Sheared off. The coolant was half empty and the oil was 2+ quarts over - mechanic says all signs point to a dropped valve that has punched through the piston.

91,000 trouble free miles, then she ups and croaks. Has anyone heard of this??

RIP - you were an excellent truck.

You scared me for a minute! I thought my sport trac was dead. I might have to add my last name to my tag now.

That's why I use a different handle around here. Dingo (Andy Calhoun) calls me OtherAndy.

Should we expect lots of parts on the for sale board?

I had a car do something similar. Was running great...then started running like crap. CEL lights up...then it's dead - motor shot.

What had happened was something caused all the coolent to drain very quickly (I must have run over something).

What was "funny" was that the engine temp still showed normal.

Man that really sucks! Sorry to hear it! Very clean looking truck in your pic of it, thats too bad.

If you do decide to sell some parts, I could use some for my '02.

Any idea what your going to get to replace it? A new Adrenalin maybe?

Andy, isn't there one of those engine swap places in SD? Remanufactured engines, same day service! Its like having your own pit crew, would hate to see a truck as nice as yours go bye-bye. I mean only 91k on the odometer, you could still see another 100,000 miles out of that truck. Unless of course you're ready to buy a new one??? Good luck, sorry to hear the bad news, BC

PS: is Kansas City Barbeque still over there? Man thats some good eats, oh yeah, and Roberto's taco stands? Thanks.

i bet you wish you didnt drive it that extra miles.

but so sorry to hear that.

i had one of my cylinders misfire too.

but i drove the truck like that for about a month or two.

side effect of that was that it would sometimes jerk itself

repeteadly. but i doubt oyull get much for it if you take it to a junk yard.

id be interested in buying the center console armrest.

left tailight and steering wheel.

Some of the St's aropund here have been known to drop valves......

Bob,

A fire destroyed the joint in June 2008. But they rebuilt and reopened in 2009. Link below. Ate there many times while stationed in San Diego in the USN between 1988-1991. Best BBQ joint on the planet!:haveabeer:

I'm from Kansas City and live here, but I work for a company in San Diego. (I Fly out there 3-4 times a year) The Kansas City BBQ place is ok there, but I found that I actually liked Brett's BBQ much better.

:back2topic:

Andy S. Even if you dont want to keep your Trac, please consider having a good used engine installed. You can sell it and I am sure you will recoup what it costs you and then some. Thats just a very nice looking low mileage ST, and I'd hate to see it end up in a junkyard.

Andy,

Do you have a high series console in your ST? I have the one with the bag and I'm looking to upgrade. If your seeling off all your parts please email me and let me know if you are interested in making a deal.

thanks!

A used engine is $3500, a refurb is $4500. At those prices it doesn't makes sense to bring it back to life. There is a shop near me that buys vehicles and refurbs them, so the Trac may live again, but not for me.

There is a 2007 with 54K for sale near me, but they want a shade under $17,000. Seems like a lot, but it's been a while since I've been in the market.

Andy,

Roger is right. I can give you another reason to get the engine replaced.

You will pay a hell of a lot more Personal Property Tax for that '07 ST

Than you do currently for your '02.

A used engine is $3500, a refurb is $4500.

OMG !! Surely a used engine wouldn't go for THAT ! !

If you were on the east coast I'd sell you my spare for half that ............. and kiss you when you left with it!:love::love::love::love:

Okay, I was kidding about the kissing! :cheeky:

Look on Car-Part .com. Some there for between $950-$500 in Cali.
