Has anyone had problems with their explorer sport-trac automatic transmission hard shifting and slipping in and out of over drive. I have complained to Ford motor company and they are not aware of any consistent problem in this area. I have spoked with some independent transmission specialist and they have indicated that they have received techincal bulletins that explorer sport-trac transmissions have a manufacture problem and they are rebuiding the transmissions at an average cost of $1500. If you have had this problem, I encourage you to contact ford so that they can track this problem. I have 2 friends that have the same problem and Ford will not answer their questions or provide assistance.

Can you have your independent Transmission Specialist please direct you to the website or office these TBS'es came from? The reason why I ask is many folks here look up tbs info all the time and nothing major has been reported for transmissions other than 04 and some 05's needing the transmission fluid additive.

This would be some good info if there is such a TBS.

from you post on a different tranny thread:

I know 2 other people with sport tracs, a 2002, 2004 and a 2005 and all have identical tranny problems, whats up?

I just looked up and put in my favorites all the TSB's I could find on my 04

Wow there were a few. Anyone interested?

On the 04's one of the TSB's mentioned 05 not just for the additives it was something else. For the 04 owners: there was a TSB in Each Catagory listed and a couple of tbs's in at least 2 of catagories. I could do a search and send to ya if you would like on the 05.

At 75k I blew my rear and 85k my tranny went. It was slipping and the check engine light was coming on and off but when i got it checked out i was told it was gas cap and an egr valve. Luckily i bought the extended warranty and it cost me $100 for the rear and $100 for the trans out of pocket. I have a 2002 Sport trac.

"At 75k I blew my rear". For some bizarre reason I find the statement very amusing this afternoon:lol:

Seriously, just posted the other day that I have the slipping issue - I will be taking it into Ford next week and see what they say and report back. So far they have been good with warranty work. Not sure why they would pass it up, I assume Ford corporate has to reimburse them for any warranty work.

Ford knows they have a problem with this transmission. It is defective and they've ignored the issue because the issue does not usually raise it's ugly head until after warrenty. Most folks do not get the extended coverage, and they shouldn't have too....a tranny should go 150k + if it is maintained before it needs an overhaul...my 2002 went 34K...Service guy at Ford just shrugged his shoulders

snett,

Unfortunately, there are a lot of members here who have had transmission problems. Most the the problems have occurred on early 2001 and 2002 Sport Tracs, and most of them occurred at 50K miles or more, so they are well out of the standard warranty.

There are several problems with the 5R55E transmission that even goes back to it's 4 speed predicessor.

The transmission frequently has problems with slipping while shifting between 2nd and 3rd gear. The source of the problem is sticking solenoid operated valves in the valvebody. Ford added a 2-3 gear speed sensor to identify when the slipping occurs, however slipping becomes severe long before the sensor triggers a blinking O/D light, and that usually means the transmission needs to be rebuilt.

Another problem is that the valvebody gasket in the transmission tends to leak and cause fluid pressure losses that can make the transmission slip, or shift harshly, as well as not engage forward or reverse drive gears or slow to engage drive gears.

Finally, some 2004 and perhaps some early 2005 models were found to have the wrong transmission fluid installed at the factory and there was a recall to have a fluid friction modifier added. If the transmission was damaged because of the wrong fluid, Ford would make repairs, but I don't think they would do anything except add the friction modifier if your vehicle was out of warranty.

As previously stated. I don't think Ford sees this as a problems since most of the transmission problems have occurred after the warranty had expired and many transmission were fixed by Non-Dealer shops.

When I say that Ford does not see this as a problem does not mean they are unaware of these transmission failures, it's just that if the transmissions fail after the warranty expires, then that's no longer their problem. If the same number of transmissions failed while the vehicles were still under warranty, then that would be a recongnizable problem for Ford.
