Some info now on Sports Illustrated site...

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.

The Cardinals said they were told of the 29-year-old reliever's death by the St. Louis Police Department. The team's home game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night was postponed.

The team said the accident happened in St. Louis, but no other details were disclosed. The Cardinals and police are expected to make a statement this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Hancock has pitched for four major league clubs. He went 3-3 in 62 regular-season appearances for the Cardinals last season and pitched in three postseason games. He was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight games this season.

Hancock joined the Cardinals before the 2006 season. He has pitched for Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.

I remember when he was a Phillie. He was supposed to be part of a young trio with Gavin Floyd and Cole Hamels, though he never quite hit the level the Phils wanted him to hit. Nevertheless, that is a dang shame.

They just had a press conference at Busch Stadium. It looks like he ran into the back of a tow truck on west bound highway 40/61 this morning. So far, it doesn't look like excessive speed or alcohol was a factor. St. Louis Police will know more when they reconstruct the last 12 hours prior, and the funeral will be Thursday.

I remember watching him pitch at Auburn my last year in school in 1997. That was probably Auburn's best baseball team and I was lucky enough to go to all of the home games and make a road trip to Omaha to watch him and Tim Hudson, now with the Braves, pitch. Tim Hudson was the star of the team that year. He was the starting center fielder, the 1st in the pitching rotation, the best hitter on the team, and the 1997 SEC player of the year.

They announced on the news today that he had denied a cab ride home from a restaurant. They did NOT imply drinking was a factor. This is a horrible blow the Cardinals, maybe it will help get them out of the World Series hangover they have been in all season.
