Question : ( if any of you know for sure )

In Pennsylvania, is the the Sport Trac considered a truck or an SUV ? Reason I ask - the dealership I bought the '07 from tells me that my '01 was incorrectly registered as a truck ( and thus "truck" tags ) and has sent me new tags, stating that the ST is an SUV which gets plain tags. I could care less what tags are on the truck, but I would like this question answered.

Can anybody help ?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Eric,

Truck. Ordinarily, PA classifies anything with a bed as a truck. 4-door Explorers are considered station wagons and fall under the passenger car category. If they registered it as an Explorer, PennDOT may have overlooked the fact and think it is a 4-door (see the code section below). No harm, I suppose, since it falls under the code definition and you'll save some greenbacks when it's time to renew.

67 Pa. Code sec. § 41.3. Station wagons, vans and multipurpose vehicles criteria.

(a) Optional truck registration. A station wagon or van may be registered as a truck, at the option of the registrant.

(b) Passenger car registration. A station wagon, multipurpose vehicle or van may be registered as a passenger car if:

(1) It has permanently-installed fullsize seats for at least the driver and three passengers. Seats may be convertible to cargo space, for example, by folding, but may not be designed to be readily removed and reinstalled.

(2) It has windows on both sides and in the rear. Windows may not be separated by opaque areas wider than 12 inches.

(3) It is not designed or adapted for use as a mobile dwelling or office.

(4) It is not designed, used or maintained primarily for the transportation of property.

(5) It is a van having a seating capacity for more than ten persons but no more than 15 persons, including the driver, and is owned by a natural person and used solely for noncommercial purposes, or is used in a ridesharing arrangement.

In sec. 41.2, the code defines a multipurpose vehicle as: "Multipurpose vehicle—A motor vehicle designed to carry no more than six passengers, including the driver, which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation."

Seems Trac to me... :)

Eric,

My ST has the tiger tag for the philly zoo.My new registration just came back for $58.50.They have it registered as a truck. Not sure. It may depend on how the dealership sends in the paperwork.

You maywant to look into the insurance difference. Any money saved on the plates may beost as SUV's normally cost more to cover.

Plus, if you have an accident you may get some hassle due to ithe wrong coverage.

Mine is reg'd as a truck. I thought it was going to be under a station wagon, but when I picked it up at the dealer, they said they thought the same thing, but when they looked into it, it falls under the truck tag.

I live in PA also, mine is registered as a truck (TK on the owners card), but I traded a Ranger on it that was registered as a truck and they just swapped the plate over to the Trac. Maybe that has something to do with it. Costs about $30 more a year to register. My old 87 Astro cargo van is registered as a truck too.
