Anyone have any recommendations on replacing the steering wheel leather? I have a 2003 ST with a grey interior and the leather wrap is very worn. I tried putting a cover over it but I can't get past it. I've tried some Google searching and haven't had much luck.

Would welcome suggestions on where to look or if someone has taken on that task on previously.

Thanks!

John

I have an 02. Got a very good identical match color pull over from Wal-Mart that has been on for over two years now. I know you said you tried but it will fit for sure. It looks really sharp and cleans well. Hasn't faded or discolored with sun or hand oil. Good luck

I had to totally remove mine because the adhesive inside the leather started breaking down and oozing black gunk through the seams. I tried cleaning the leather, but decided it wasn't worth it. I picked up a sew-on (not lace-on) leather steering wheel cover at Pep-boys. I've used them before to good effect. They take a while to stitch up and even longer to tighten up, but they look really good when you're done. Unfortunately I never seemed to have time on the Sport Trac, and all I have on there now is a cheap perforated vinyl lace-on cover. It looks much better than the old one, but I still want my leather cover!

Wheelskins makes the best I could find at a reasonable price. It's real leather, about 2mm thick. $54.00 by the time I got it, but I think you could do better.

Because of the inconsistency of the descriptions on Amazon, etc., the size can be difficult to determine. It's AXX (14 1/2 to 15 1/2" outside diameter, 3 5/8 to 3 7/8" grip diameter).

Their website (and others) have instructions for several lacing patterns. If you choose the baseball stitch (like OEM), you'll need additional lacing. Contact them and they will send it and a needle at no additional cost.

Call and they will send color samples (leather swatches) and catalog.

I replaced the whole steering wheel, when the lumpiness under the leather got to be annoying. The part was $324 from our sponsor, fastpartsnetwork.com, four years ago. Installation was not difficult.

I used Craft customs. A little pricy but been great for 100K miles or so.

That looks good, Todd.

The one shortcoming of the Wheelskins is they are not tailored to completely cover the OEM leather on the spokes. It doesn't look bad, but the Craft looks OEM (or better).

What's involved and what is the cost?

Well you need to know how to swap a steering wheel...:)

I have a junk yard wheel here so I installed that and sent my OEM wheel to them to be recovered.

I believe I paid 325 or so. Then installed when I got it back.
