This is becoming a very common problem throughout the country, it is just starting in my state and will become a big problem real quick I believe because there are a couple of places advertising on craigslist and some local classified how much they will pay for them. Fairly easy money for a thief. It can be a very difficult thing for the police to solve, I mean proving that a certain converter is a stolen. The smart thieves dont keep large collections of them on hand so as not to draw attention to themselves and not making it obvious that they stole them.

I'm thinking that police need to start leaving "bait" vehicles in areas that are being frequently hit with surveilence and converters that can easily be identified as stolen (marked in some way). Since many dealers are required to get ID's and keep records of who their transactions the police could then check the dealers for the stolen ones and then trace it back to the thief. Some departments probably are doing this. This wont catch them all because not all dealers are required to keep records and not all dealers (just like pawn shops) abide by the rules and just simply dont keep track or fudge the paperwork. This problem is sure to get much worse in the near future.

Maybe we should just all paint ours bright orange, that might deter a thief because it will stand out and be identifiable, oh wait if we all do it, it wont be unique so I call orange you guys pick your own colors. :D

New car manufactors may have to start stamping the vin# on the converters. Then maybe a fedral law can be passed to forcebuyers to register the whole tranaction. Iam not for big government but what can you do?
