Its that time again. Last year I saw on here where some of you used or were going to use the free tax prep through the IRS site.

Q1: Anybody do it?

Q2: Have any problems o any kind? (like spam email or reg mail crap?)

Q3: What do those companies do with our private and personal info?

I know that State Farm is offering free tax preparation software through their website if you have one of your accounts accessible online at their site. I'm not sure if this includes filing as well since I'm in no hurry to give them their money.

I've been preparing my income tax online for years. Our tax situation isn't very complicated, so I'm happy with the walk-through method they use to finish my taxes. They do keep your info from year-to-year, which can be handy if you go back to the same company next year, because you don't have to fill out all the W-2 information again. Being an IT guy myself, I have to trust that their IT guys (Intuit TurboTax, in my case) know what they're doing and are keeping my personal information secure - if they didn't, they'd be out of business.

They do send out email advertising their wares for the next year, but as legitimate companies, it's fairly easy to unsubscribe from their mailing lists.

For what it's worth, Intuit are among the list of the 100 best company's to work for so i'm sure they've got their ducks in a row. Their office is right up the street from mine, maybe my company will make the list next year.....

i havent ever used that, ive had used h&r block online. it has seemed to be very easy. but this year, ima have to pay some1 to do it for me, just for fact... that i was working til april and everything was good, then got injuried on the job. started collecting workers comp. and workers comp is suppose to be non-taxed and it wasnt on my pay stub. so this is goin to be real fun, figuring that crap out. so ill just pay some1 to do it this year.

If your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for 2006 was $27,000 or less then you can use Turbo Tax for free. If not then you can do the online basic for $14.95. That's what I used last year.

I have used TurboTax for the last 12-14 years and never had a problem, even when claiming a home office with computers, printers 2-line phone, etc, (while an IT Consultant).

The only problem I ever had was trying to file for a refund of State taxes in about 6 different states. The company I worked for collected taxes for the state where you were on-site not just where I lived (Texas does not have an income tax) When I filed to get my taxes back from PA, the TurboTax kept using my whole taxable income, not just what I earned while working in PA...It kept saying that I owed PA another $2000+ ??? I could never get around that problem and just ate the tax money that went to PA. Oh well!!

If we had the Fair Tax enacted, we wouldn't have this predicament...would we.

Abolish the IRS.

Caymen--there is no such thing as a "Fair Tax", as any tax is going to have someone, somewhere, paying it, and those people aren't going to think it's fair. This proposed tax system overhaul would stand a lot better chance of success if people would stop calling it by this ridiculous name and come up with something more objectively descriptive.

Regarding the original topic of this thread, I've used TaxACT online for several years now, and have found it to be very simple and easy. I think $14.95 covers you this year for both state and fed.

Bottom line is for taxes to be "fair" I would pay less and you would pay more.

After all the government will not spend "less"/

I've got a simple situation and the wife and I have used Turbo tax online the past couple years due to it being free for military members. this year they are not offering it free, But H&R Block is. Thiers is called Tax Cut and I have already started doing my '06 returns, seems pretty straight forward if your stuff isn't too complicated.

Bill V, you think "fair tax" is a ridiculous name, and not objectively description. I think just the opposite. What other tax system that you have heard of is more "fair" than a national sales tax?

Sure, they could call it the "national sales tax" program, but that's not what we as people do. We like to give meaningful, sometimes over simplistic names for things. Say, like "death tax", or "marriage penalty", etc.

We used taxslayer last year, it was free to file for military and had no issues at all. My son also used them and I think it cost him about 20.00 to file.
