Looking for the terminology on the lap top screens. For example, the ol traditional screen is called ????

The newer style that is shiny and looks more modern ????

Thanks...

There is no real standard for what the screens are called. They are sometimes called True Bright, True Life, Bright View... depending on the manufacturer.

Are you looking at buying a laptop from a specific company?

I guess what I am after is the two that are the main styles out there.

Like TFT, (Thin Film Transfer) vs, what ever the other main style is. One of them is more crisp and clear and has a nice shiny screen..

Coastie, some Sony laptops have "Xbrite" which is just they're term. They add a few layers of anti-glare coating. Check out Sony's site to check it out.

The old technology was Dual Scan. It was phased out with the Active Matrix screen. It seems now that the TFT screen is the newest.

When considering what price range laptop you're going to buy, an important factor is what type of screen you want. If you are hunting for bargains, beware passive matrix (DSTN / HPA) screens. Basically, they look terrible. The standard LCD laptop screen today is Active Matrix (TFT). Both types of screen are perfectly flat, about half an inch thick, and don't use much power. For passive matrix screens, HPA screens are harder to view at angles, but newer versions have improved greatly from the vague and translucent image quality of old DSTN screens. Still, TFT screens are brighter and sharper than even the best passive matrix screens. LCD manufacturers don't even make passive matrix screens anymore, so if you are buying a new model, you don't have to worry much about that.

heh,

the difference is the shiny ones have an extra piece of trasparent material, glass etc., infron tof the screen that is tinted usually a nuetral gray color - deepens the blacks and enhances the color to the human eye - they just have to run brighter for thre whites to stand out and i find them annoying because they reflect everything, lights, your face, etc. they do protect your lcd screen though.
