I've been wanting to get around to putting in a new light in my upstairs hall anyway. Last night the light fixture craps out and doesn't work at all. After dinner tonight I go to Lowe's and buy the one I've wanted.

Carefully remove the old light, it uses two three-way switches so I can't tell if it has power or not.

Touch a tester to the bare wires. Nuthin'. Flip the switch, nuthin'. Remove switchplate, touch tester to switch screws, nuthin'. Touch tester to other switch, it lights up. Hmm. Go downstairs to test that switch. Before I unscrew the cover plate, I see the downstairs switch is stuck in the middle.

I guess the problem wasn't the light.

You could havve replaced the light, still had nothing, taken the fixture back to Lowes and pissed and moaned about everything..... then found the problem later..... it's happened before :D

R Shek,

That was real close to happening. Real close to calling my electrician friend too, who if I had, would never let me forget it.

Oh well, I wanted a new light anyway and I'm only out $18.

Johnny,

you will never know how many times I have been called for stuff like this. After over 30 yrs in the trade, I'd hate to have to count.

1 I remember is priceless:

The college computer tech. called and needed a new 20 amp plug added for a new copier their were getting.

Went on Friday and added the plug. The copier was delivers on Sat. On Monday I get a call that saids I put the wrong plug in.

OK, now there isn't to many types of plugs I could put in. He asked for a 20 amp 120 volt plug.

Only 2 normal plugs possible. So, I go to the shop, pick up another plug to go change.

Walked into the office, looked at the machine, and pluged it into the wall.

Seams he looked at the plug on the machine, seen the -l instead of ll and didn't see that the plug in the wall would fit.

I walked over and said ok, that'll be 95.00 please. (as a joke).

Here's a link on how to diagnose 3-way switches that I have used several times. Don't think it covers switches in the middle though!
