As far as I know you don't need to drop the whole transmission, but you will have to drop the pan to access the valve body. Goodluck, it could get messy.
 
Flip Trac is correct. You do not need tor remove the whole transmission, just the fluid pan, filter and valvebody. The solenoids are attached to the valvebody and are usually removed with the valvebody as a unit.



Watchout when you remove the valvebody. There is a gasket you will need to replace and also some checkballs that you don't want to fall out or loose. The must go back in the exact same place. It's common to use a little dab of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to hold the check balls in place when you reinstall the valvebody.
