I believe this is a scam. Tonight my niece gives me a call and asks if I've heard about the "gasoline rebate"? She says you call this number and give them YOUR SOCIAL SECIRTY NUMBER to qualify for the rebate. Immediately... blinking light bulbs.....SCAM<SCAM< SCAM. I told her to call the police and give them the inofrmation that she has for this so called "rebate". Talk about being a real id***!

What do you think?

She better watch out for some wierd stuff to happen. All you need is a SSN. Hey, maybe get her in on the scam that one guy posted on here awhile ago!!! All she needs to do is give $500 and she'll be set!!;)

Bad News!!!!

NEVER give out your SS number or a Credit Card number. You need to get this number to a local cop shop and have them investigate it.

I personally think your Niece is about to get a lesson in life....

I read this, and Gov Richardson is making a proposal. It looks like a special session is required to enact a new law. It may have given the scammers the idea for the scam, but it sure doesn't look like the government of NM is behind your niece's phone call. Besides, the State of NM already has your niece's SSAN if she has ever paid taxes or worked in the State. They wouldn't need to call to find out her number on the phone.

Sorry, that was a scam. On the other hand, if she gets a call asking for her bank account number and PIN for a Nigerian fund transfer, it is totally legit.

As everyone else stated SCAM, If she called the number... Tell her to contact EVERY credit reporting agency to put an alert on her records "all of them experian, TRW, Equifax, and also she should contact the social security office and have this investigated.

It's true! So far I've received 3 checks from Nigerian Petroleum for about $1,500,000 nigerian dollars, but they said I have to wait for their bank (Nigerian SCAbanMk) in CA to open so I can cash them.. woo hooo!

Weird thing is that I'm getting also collection notices for accounts I don't recall opening in Haiti and the Cayman Islands... I guess I'll forward the checks.

Rose,

The state government would not have you give your social security number over the phone. The rebate will likely be part of the state income tax filing at the end of the year or perhaps based on those who filed last year.

Some scammer probably saw that info on a news report and has figured other have too and that gives his scam a sound of creditibility, and will probably bring in a lot of suckers who will give their personal info and Social Security Number.

Someone needs to report it to the news media to warn people and the State/Governor needs to get the work out to close this open door to scammers.

If it's a legitimate rebate from the state, there will ample time to claim the rebate. Scammers hope to capitalize on the greedy or the impatient so they announce their "Plan" before the State has a chance to announce the official rebate plan.

What exactly is a Social Security Number?

It is your account number with the Social Security Administration.

It is not a "Federal ID number" or anything else. It is a bank account number. You would not freely give out your savings account number, credit card number, the combination to your safe, or anything else that is personal and private.

Whenever someone wants your SS number, do not give it to them. I went as far as having my SS number taken off my drivers license. When showing ID for beer or anything else, nobody needs to see my SS number.

Actually...it is true! I did a little more research on the Governor's website, found a toll free number and called it. The individual I spoke with told me that if you want to know exactly how much you are receiving, that you do have to provide your social security #. If you paid taxes in New Mexico for 2004 you automatically qualify. Apparentally, they had a surplus and it is being returned to the taxpayers as a relief to rising gasoline & heating costs. This is a one time deal. I also called another agency in the state and got confirmation on this rebate.
