2001 SportTrac, Factory 6 Disc changer with subwoofer.

I have added the module for a Line-In for MP3 playback.

It works fine, with the exception of one oddity: Sometimes the volume will only go UP. Regardless of which way I rotate the volume knob, it just increases. It seems to happen more when it gets cold.

It's really not as bad as it sounds.. The workaround is to use "Mute". Push Mute, then when you increase the volume it starts from zero and increases. But, it can be a little confusing when someone borrows my ST.

I'm just wondering if this is a known problem, common to other owners. Or, is this unique to mine? If others have gotten this, are there any real fixes short of replacing the stereo?

the same thing is happening to one of our ambulances at my EMS base...we have no idea what it is, wont stop going up until it hits full power...sucks bad when comming back from a call 20 minutes away...let me know how you make out

Does the mute thing work for you?

Also, to clarify my situation, my volume only changes when I move the volume knob. It does not increase on its own, which I think some others have experienced.

Ok in our mustang and lightning we bought the chrome like volume dials for the radio. so now its tricky you have to turn it down slowly and if that dont work we just it mute and start over. If its still the stock knob i dont know why it does it. just thought i would put out my 2 cents

I had this happen to my home stereo system it happens to electronic Volume adjusting(not the old mechanical resistor type) nobs when they get dirty I don't know why they only go up though. Mine would only go up unless i turned it really slow or pushed it in and turned, really anoing. I had mine cleaned and it works fine now.

Interesting.. I have cleaned the old mechanical style before. I didn't know they could clean the new ones.

I wonder what the cleaning involves. Is it just compressed air, or if it is something like the contact cleaner used on the old style equipment.

My '01 factory 6 disc does it.. mostly when it's cold..Done it for years.. I've gotten good at barey movin it till it starts to go down..Just got used to it..If you find a fix lemme know..lol

I pulled my volume knob off today, to check it out more closely. I had tried before and stopped for fear of breaking it.. it took more force than expected.

I was hoping that would expose something "cleanable", but it was pretty enclosed. I gave it a couple shots of compressed air, but it had no effect.

I messed around with it a bit more, to check out the behavior. As others mentioned, if you move the knob very slowly backwards, it will decrease the volume. But, if you move it quickly either way, it goes up.

I think the "reset to zero" via Mute is the method I'll stick with for now.
