Actually, a free Linux desktop distro might not be all that bad a way to go. Linux runs great on older machines, and for what Coastie's daughter needs (email, web access, minor word processing?), it should install easy and work great. And you can get Live CDs to see if they'll run on that machine (hardware driver availability can still be an issue on systems with proprietary hardware).
