DETROIT (AP) - The United Auto Workers Union says its members working for Ford Motor Co. have approved contract changes that include freezing wages and cutting other benefits in a move to aimed at helping the automaker remain competitive.

The approved agreement also ends the jobs bank program and lets Ford make payments in stock to a union-run trust for retiree health care.

The union says 59% of production workers and 58% of skilled-trades workers voted for the agreement.

Ford is not seeking government funding and is the first U.S. automaker to come to an agreement with the union.

nice to see that the workers made a great choice to stay employed.

a domestic toyota worker had a great statement when they recently took a 10% pay cut.

"sacrafice is a small price for stability"

Ford survived the depression of 1929 and managed to build and sell thousands of Model-T's follow by the Model-A's in the early 1930's. During that time, many auto manufacturers and large businesses went belly-up. And Ford did it by paying it's workers some of the best wages in the nation.

By not taking the bail-out money, they are light years ahead of GM and Chrysler. The last I heard, GM has spent all of its bailout money and is asking for more or it will collapse. I don't think we/governement should give it to them until they get rid of the execs who got them into this mess, continue to be in denial, and refuse to change their same old strategies that lead to their financial woes. They blame it on the credit crunch, but they have been loosing money for years before the credit market collapsed this past fall. GM needs to wake up and smell the coffee and dump the current executive staff and bring in some fresh blood at a lower salary.
