Rodger,

If you just had a new clutch put in, I'm wondering if they screwed it up?? Its very rare that all transmission gears go out in a manual trans or it will not shift into one gearor won't stay in gear. Manual transmissions that will not go into any gear sounds like a broken input shaft, or the clutch is not disengaging and is binding on the input shaft ??

I would be highly suspicious that the clutch job was botched.

...Rich

I also think it is a botched clutch, I think it may be stuck to the flywheel, or the pressure plate is frozen, Could even be a bad slave cylinder or master...

Hope it is something simple...

Todd Z

I agree with Todd...Sounds like a clutch problem...Hopefully the last replacers aren't out to save face and actually own up to an inferior clutch replacement.

Would save you a lot of $...Money better spent on Royal Purple!!!

Roger, if I read your profile properly hers is a list of some of the tranny's available. Compare them to a rebuild and see what is better for you.

Let me know if I can help....

The lower on the list, the more affordable..

Rodger,

I forgot that the Sport Trac had a hydraulic clutch. If the system develops a leak, you dont have a clutch and that will make it difficult or impossible to shift or drive.

I had the clutch slave cylinder go out on my Honda, and it was difficult to shift for a day or two and then nothing! It sounds like you were experiencing some problems and you just make it to the repair shop when the clutch went out.

Syncromesh only means that the gears are always in constant mesh with the other gears (No more sliding gears). The only moving part is the toothed syncronizer ring which locks the particular gear onto the shaft and thus engages that gear. Each gear has a syncronizer, and i cannot phatom that all of the syncronizers would all go out at once.

They guys who did the clutch job should have inspected the clutch slave cylinder for leaks...Again, they done often go out all at once, they leak for a while before the shifting gets harder. Then when the fluid gets too low, and your master cylinder is sucking air, they will just quit. They should have noticed that.

I even suspect that that was the original clutch problem that made you get the clutch replaced in the first place. They replaced your clutch and probably just bled your clutch slave cylinder. As soon as your fluid level dropped the clutch died again.

Rodger, please post back about your experience with the repair shop. I might need a good place to bring my ST in case my tranny has problems too.

Thanks Richard,

The hydraulics are going to be looked at first. What you said about the synromesh does makes sense. The master/slave cylinder has plagued us. Does anyone know of a good aftermarket Master / Slave cylinder? BTW, we did have new master & slave cylinders put in new when the new clutch was put in.

The STs master cylinder is pathetic and SEEMS like it was designed to last only so long. It is built into the assembly that attaches to the clutch pedal. If it is leaking, you'll know it as clutch pedal pressure will vary from time to time and make shifting easy at times and very difficult at other times and you can probably see the leak inside the cab of the trac right beneath the clutch pedal assembly. I'm positive my slave was questionable from the day I bought the trac (new). Once I replaced it, you could tell immediately as pressure became consistent. Rodger, we've talked about this in the past, and my main question is has the clutch pedal pressure been inconsistent? I'd be really surprised if the tranny just crapped out without any warning.

Rodger,

If the master cylinder and slave cylinder were changed out when you had the new clutch installed, and now you may be having more clutch problems, I begining to think that perhaps the fluid line is bad or has one or both connectior fittings stripped?? I don't know if the ST uses a solid line, a hose or a combination. In eaither case, be sure they check all the lines fittings and bleeder valves.
